What is an ESID number?

ESI ID: electric service identifier

An ESI ID (pronounced “Easy I.D.”) is a number that is either 17 or 22 digits long and identifies a property's address with regard to the Texas electricity grid. Energy Ogre prefers the spelling “ESI ID,” but the term is also commonly spelled “ESIID” or “ESID.”

An ESI ID number is similar to a home's address or a person's social security number—all three numbers identify the particular person, place, or thing. ESI IDs are a better way of locating and identifying specific homes, apartments, and properties without solely relying on their addresses.

Having a unique ESI ID number comes in handy when similar or identical addresses exist in different parts of Texas. For example, there may be multiple 123 Main St. addresses in the state. But each address will have its own unique ESI ID number to differentiate itself and prevent electricity from being sent to the wrong location.

What else is an ESID used for?

In addition to being the main identifier of an address needing electricity service, ESI IDs also assist with billing and outage management. They help utility companies correctly bill customers by linking the energy consumption data from meters to specific service points. As well as identifying and resolving power outages by pinpointing the affected service points.
